SAGE Students to Compete in Battle of the Brains

Students who attend the Bell Prairie Intermediate SAGE Center are taking on a real-world challenge as we begin the 2013-2014 school year.  This exciting opportunity is sponsored by the Burns and McDonnell engineering firm and Kansas City's Science City at Union Station.

OUR TASK:
Design the next exhibit for Science City!

There's a challenge ahead.
We're ready to meet it.
Students at Bell Prairie sing those words to prepare for a day of learning.  In the intermediate SAGE classroom at Bell Prairie, we are taking that message to heart!

I received an email a few weeks ago about the Battle of the Brains competition sponsored by Burns and McDonnell.  As I researched the project, I got more and more interested.  This is an opportunity for AUTHENTIC learning that requires both CRITICAL THINKING and CREATIVITY.  I enjoy challenges, and this challenge taps into all of our instructional objectives for SAGE.

Will it be difficult to meet the deadlines?  Yes.

Will both teacher and students be challenged to dream big?  Absolutely!

Will we need to be creative about the resources and materials we use?  Without a doubt.

Can I envision what the students are going to create.  No.

There are videos and examples of Science exhibits across the country shown here on this blog.  We will complete our work at school, but I hope the work we are doing in SAGE sparks some wonderful "dinner table discussions."

If you happen to be an architect, an engineer, a construction professional, or a technology guru, we might be able to benefit from your expertise.  One of the big challenges for us is that we must create a chart of materials and costs for the "constructability" component, and the budget for construction is $100,000.

The students will be leading the way, so who knows what path they will choose to take.  Now that's exciting!
